The Springfield Armory XD-9 Sub-Compact is a variant of the best selling semi-automatic handgun family.

Springfield XD-9 Sub-Compact with Standard 13 Round Magazine.

In recent years the number of states allowing and citizens getting permits to carry a gun concealed on their person, has grown dramatically.  There are now over 19 million Americans “licensed to carry.”  Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Texas each have more than 1 million.  With such a large potential market, gun manufacturers have started to cater to the specific needs of the concealed carry individual, with small, relatively light, semi-automatic pistols holding from 5 to 13 rounds and typically chambered in .380” ACP, 9 x 19mm P, and .45” ACP.

The Springfield XD-9 Sub-Compact is small but high capacity semi-automatic handgun from the Springfield XD series of guns.  The full size Springfield XD-9 is based upon a Croation Military Pistol, the HS2000.  This design was licensed by Springfield and slightly modified for the U.S. handgun market.  Though marketed by Springfield Armory, it is still produced in its country of origin, Croatia (formerly part of Yugoslavia).

The XD family now includes double stack variants with 3”, 4”, and 5” barrels in 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP chamberings.   Magazines of the same caliber are interchangeable across the range of guns.  There is also a new XD-S series of single stack guns with 3.3” or 4” barrels in 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP chamberings.  As with the XD magazines of the same caliber are interchangeable across the XD-S series.  Finally, there is a series of XD (M) pistols with match grade barrels and other accuracy improvements with 5.25”, 4.5”, and 3.8” barrels  in 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP chamberings.   XD (M) magazines of the same caliber are interchangeable across the XD (M) series, but not the standard XD series.  There are options for bright finished slides, night sights, and others, that bring the total number of variants to well over 50.

The XD-9 Sub-Compact is chambered in 9mm and holds 13 rounds in the standard magazine and 16 rounds in the extended magazine.  However, 16 round magazines from the full size gun will also work.  The gun is striker fired, however in addition to the internal safeties, usual with striker fired pistols, this gun also has a 1911 type grip safety, making it very safe to carry, even with a round in the chamber.  Like most of the XD line the XD-9 Sub-Compact is also a great value because in addition to the gun with a standard 13rd Magazine, one gets a 16rd Extended Magazine, Magazine Loader, Double Magazine Pouch and Holster.

Though the gun only has a 3” barrel and it is polymer framed, its recoil is more like that of a full size steel gun thanks to an innovative double spring system for the main under-barrel spring.   The gun also has great natural pointing characteristics and in general shoots with the accuracy of a much larger gun.
