The 1891/30 with a PU Scope was the most common sniper rifle of World War II.

Mosin Nagant M1891/30 Sniper Rifle with PU Scope

Sniper versions of the M1891/30 were manufactured from 1932 to 1963.   The first version was the PE, with some 50,000 made between 1932 and 1943.  These rifles featured a mount replacing the rear sight and hunting style scope.  In 1943, the PE was replaced by the PU, which had a side mount that attached to a base mounted on the left side of the receiver.   The M1891/30 PU Sniper was; with 185,000 manufactured, by far, the most common sniper rifle of World War II.   Many were also produced post war.  As PU scopes are readily available, there are also a lot of fake PU Sniper rifles on the market.

To produce the sniper rifles, standard 1891/30 that demonstrated exceptional accuracy were pulled from the production line and modified to become sniper rifles.  The modifications were: turning down the bolts, inletting the stock for the scope mount, and attaching the scope mount base to the receiver.  The scope and its mount was then attached to the base

The scope mount had a 3.5 PU scope.  This scope was simple but effective.  It had 3.5X magnification had a wide field of view for scope of this period. Its optics were also exceptionally clear for the period and well suited to low light conditions.  Iron sights were retained as a backup, as was the ability to mount a bayonet.

This rifle was used to great effect by the Russians with several snipers with more than 100 confirmed kills.  This is also the rifle used by the Russian snipers in the movie Enemy at the Gates.  The rifle served in several armies well into the 1970s.
