Browning BDA

The Browning BDA is a .380" ACP pistol based upon Beretta 84.

Sporting handguns are not based upon designs created for police or military forces.   The are often scaled down versions of service pistols or in the case of many .22” LR pistols, completely new designs.  However, a recent trend in .22” LR pistols is to mimic military pistol versions.

The Browning BDA 380 is a pistol based upon Beretta’s Model 84.  The Beretta Model 84 is from the Beretta 80 series of pistols.  These guns all resemble scaled down Beretta 92s but it use a completely different blowback action, made possible by their small calibers of .22” LR, .32” ACP, and .380” ACP.   This action is also features a double action trigger pull on the first shot and single action on subsequent shots, like the Beretta 92.  They are available in double stack; 81 and 84, or single stack; 82, 83, 85, 86, 87 and 89 versions.   There is even a version with a tip-up barrel, the 86 to facilitate loading for those who cannot rack the slide.   The model 84, which is chambered in .380” ACP and has a 13rd double stack magazine was the most widely manufactured model.

Fabrique National (FN), which owns the Browning brand in the United States, contracted with Beretta to manufacture a version of the model 84 called the the FN/Browning BDA.  The frame on the BDA is the same as the Model 84, except for FN or Browning branded grips.  The Browning BDA had wood grips with Browning logo medallions.  The slide was considerably different as it was fully enclosed, except for the ejection port, while all the 80 series Berettas featured Berettas traditional cut away slide.   This did not seem to impact reliability and the BDA is a very reliable gun.   It is also very accurate as it fairly large and heavy for a .380” ACP pistol being the size of a typical 9mm double stack compact pistol.   These guns were manufactured for FN/Browning from 1977 to 1997 in both .380” ACP and .32” ACP, though only the .380” ACP was sold in the United States.  They are highly sought after due to the quality, accuracy, and relative scarcity.
